MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric rose while those of jeera and coriander fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Friday. Prices of turmeric rose amid wedding season demand and rising concern of a fall in yield and output due to excessive rainfall, analysts said. Prices of jeera fell due to low export demand, while coriander was down due to weak spot market demand, they said.

The most-active December contract of TURMERIC rose 0.6% to INR 14,730 per 100 kg due to rising concerns of crop loss following heavy rainfall, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Concerns about yield losses in key growing regions of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka due to excessive rainfall in the last few weeks of September and the first half of October are supporting prices, they said. Continuous rainfall has triggered disease outbreaks in some areas, with high humidity hampering storage and preservation.

Prices are also supported by the ongoing demand for the wedding season, which spans across November and December, analysts at SMC Global said.

The most-active December contract of JEERA was down nearly 0.2% at INR 20,470 per 100 kg amid weak export demand following the end of the retail season and subdued foreign buying interest, Kedia Advisory said. According to data from the Spices Board of India, the country exported 92,810 tonnes of jeera in Apr-Aug, down 17% from the year-ago period. Prices are likely to be weighed down further as selling pressure on farmers has increased at higher price levels, SMC Global said. While wedding season demand could lift prices, a steep rise is unlikely due to the availability of ample carry-forward stocks, Kedia Advisory said.

The most-active November contract of CORIANDER fell nearly 0.7% to INR 8,274 per 100 kg, due to weak demand in spot markets, analysts said. However, the fall in prices is likely to be temporary as steady demand for the wedding season will keep prices supported in the medium term, SMC Global said. Tight supply conditions are also likely to support prices, the brokerage said.
