MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Maharashtra fell due to higher availability as crushing has begun, said traders. Prices in Uttar Pradesh were largely steady due to poor demand and availability of alternatives such as khandsari and jaggery, they said.

Prices of the sweetener in Maharashtra fell by INR 10 per 100 kg as demand is poor amid higher availability, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. As crushing is underway in full swing, there is ample sugar available in the market, he said.

Amid expectations of lower demand, the government has reduced the sales quota for November in all major sugar-producing states. The quota for Maharashtra for November is down over 19% on month at 585,902 tonnes. Prices are likely to remain range-bound in the coming days, Kuvadia said.

In Uttar Pradesh, prices of sugar were largely steady due to lower demand and availability of alternatives such as khandsari and jaggery, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from northern India. Given the limited demand from bulk consumers of sugar such as ice-cream, cold-drink manufacturers, and confectioners, traders are preferring to buy sugar on a day-to-day basis, he said.

"There is no festival this month, so bulk orders are limited," Gupta said. Demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers has also fallen as the weather turns cooler in many parts of northern India, he said. However, Gupta expects prices to increase during the end of the month when weddings take place on a large scale in northern India.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,850-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,870-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 10 at INR 3,962-INR 4,072 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Down INR 10 at INR 3,800-INR 3,830 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1451 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was steady at 14.19 cents per pound.  End

US$1 = INR 88.66
