MUMBAI – Oilseed prices Friday showed a mixed trend across key spot markets of the country. Mustard prices were up in Jaipur due to concerns of a supply shortage, while groundnut and soybean prices were steady, said traders.
MUSTARD seed prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, rose INR 50 from the previous day to INR 7,275-INR 7,300 per 100 kg, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of mustard seed across the country were steady at 250,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), according to GGN Research. Prices are up as heavy rainfall in the last week of October has led to the possibility of crop damage, leading to a shortage in supply, traders said.
SOYBEAN prices in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,200-INR 4,750 per 100 kg, said Narendra Porwal, a local trader. Arrivals were also steady at 8,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he added. Prices were steady across the key markets due to lower demand for soymeal, said traders.
"Arrivals will increase from now as farmers are not holding back on stocks as prices are unlikely to be at the same level as the minimum support prices," Porwal said. "Moreover, farmers are getting incentives under the Bhavantar yojana, so they are offloading whatever stocks they have in the pipeline," he said.
Eight years after shelving it, the Madhya Pradesh government has reintroduced the controversial Bhavantar Bhugtan Yojana, a scheme intended to shield soybean farmers if market prices fall below the minimum support price by compensating them. Introduced in October 2017, the Bhavantar scheme, which translates to price difference scheme, acts as an alternative to direct procurement by the government by offering compensation to farmers on select crops.
Prices of GROUNDNUT in Ratlam were steady at INR 3,100-INR 5,250 per 100 kg, Porwal said. Arrivals were at 26,000 bags, up 4,000 bags from the previous day (1 bag = 40 kg), he added. Currently, groundnut with lower moisture content is arriving into the market, but after some days, the quality of arrivals is likely to be poor and full of moisture due to the rains in the last week of October, he added.
