India Apr-Aug spices export up 21% YoY at 798,475 tn, jeera export down 17%

MUMBAI – India's spices exports rose 21% on year to 798,475 tonnes in Apr-Aug from 658,365 tonnes a year ago, according to data released by Spices Board of India on Thursday. In terms of value, the exports were up 3% on year at $1.8 billion.
According to the data, India exported 92,810 tonnes of jeera in Apr-Aug, down 17% from the year-ago period. Exports of fennel fell the most during the period, by 66% to 15,670 tonnes. Exports of celery fell 31% to 2,470 tonnes.
On the other hand, exports of ginger surged 340% to 66,902 tonnes during the period, while those of small cardamom rose 75% to 4,147 tonnes. Curry powder and paste saw an increase of 65% in export during the period at 50,869 tonnes. Other spices that recorded a sizable increase included chilli, garlic, and tamarind.
