MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were steady Tuesday, said traders. They expect prices to remain at the current level throughout the month despite a lower sales quota for November, as there will be less demand.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as there was limited demand, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Traders in the resale markets are not stocking up on the sweetener and are only buying on a day-to-day basis as there is less demand from bulk consumers of sugar such as confectionaries. "There is no festival during this month, so bulk orders are limited," Gupta said.
In fact, demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers is also less as the temperature has started getting cooler in many parts of northern India, he said. The government has set the domestic sugar sales quota for November at 2.0 million tonnes, 16.7% lower than 2.4 million tonnes in October and down slightly over 9% from 2.2 million tonnes in November last year.
Sugar prices were largely steady in Maharashtra on Tuesday and will continue to remain range-bound in the coming days, Kuvadia said.
Amid expectations of lower demand, the government has reduced the sales quota for all major sugar-producing states. The quota for Maharashtra in November is lower by over 19% on month at 585,902 tonnes. The sales quota allocated by the government for Uttar Pradesh is over 22% lower than in October at 736,093 tonnes, and the sales quota for Karnataka has been cut by nearly 8% on month to 249,927 tonnes, according to a notification from the Department of Food and Public Distribution. The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,850-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,870-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 4,075-INR 4,137 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,925-INR 3,940 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 2044 IST, prices of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was down nearly 3% at 14.23 cents per pound, tracking losses in crude oil prices on NYMEX. A decrease in crude oil prices results in lower diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, thus increasing the availability of sugar. End
