Fall to 2-week low on profit taking; most sectors in red

MUMBAI – The benchmark indices ended at an over two-week low on Tuesday as profit taking intensified. They indices had made robust gains in October. Only nine Nifty 50 constituents managed to close the session in the green as heavyweights such as Larsen & Toubro, HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, ITC, and ICICI Bank languished in the red for most of the session.

 

The Nifty 50 ended at 25597.65 points, down 165.70 points or 0.6%. The Sensex closed at 83459.15 points, down 519.34 points or 0.6%. Barring Nifty Consumer Durables, all other sectoral indices ended lower. Nifty India Defence and Nifty Metal were the worst hit. All the broader market indices also ended lower, with the small-cap indices faring the worst.

 

Power Grid Corp. of India ended more than 3% lower and was the worst hit in the Nifty 50 after both its net profit and revenue for the September quarter missed analysts' estimates. Coal India ended nearly 3% lower. Adani Enterprises, which was around 1% lower, fell 3% at its lowest after the company's earnings for the September quarter showed that it would have reported a loss if not for a one-time income. The company's consolidated net profit for the quarter jumped up sharply on-year boosted by a one-time gain of INR 35.83 billion. Excluding this one-time income, the company would have reported a net loss of INR 3.85 billion. The stock ended 2% lower.

 

On the other hand, Titan Co. rose over 2% to its highest level since October 2024 and was the top gainer in the 50-stock index following robust growth in its top line and bottom line for the September quarter. Bharti Airtel hit an all-time high and ended nearly 2% higher after it reported a strong set of numbers for the September quarter, with many brokerages raising their target price on the stock post its earnings.

 

Hitachi Energy India ended over 14% higher and was the top gainer in the Nifty 200 after its net profit surged fivefold on year in the September quarter. After a muted first half of the financial year, ICICI Securities expects the company's order inflows to improve in the second half. Swiggy rose 3?ter global brokerage Bernstein initiated coverage on the stock with an 'overweight' rating, with its target price implying a potential upside of 39%. Hero MotoCorp, on the other hand, fell over 4% and was the worst hit in the Nifty 200 after it sales fell substantially on year in October.

 

Blue Jet Healthcare hit a 10% lower band at INR 606.65 and was the worst hit in the Nifty 500 after its net profit and revenue fell on year in the September quarter. Reliance Power ended 7% lower, while Reliance Infrastructure hit a 5% lower band for the second straight session, after the Enforcement Directorate provisionally attached some assets of Reliance Infrastructure for alleged violations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. Assets of Reliance Power, a subsidiary of Reliance Infrastructure, have not been attached in the probe, the arm had clarified to the exchanges.

 

3M India ended 17% higher and was the top gainer in the 500-stock index after its revenue and profit for Jul-Sept jumped up sharply on year. City Union Bank closed over 7% higher after its profit for the quarter ended September rose on year and beat the Street's view. TBO Tek ended over 6% higher after the company reported a sharp on-year rise in bottom line and top line for the second quarter of FY26.
