MUMBAI – India is likely to have imported about 1.25 million tonnes of edible oils in October, down 12% from 1.42 million tonnes a year ago, Solvent Extractors' Association of India Executive Director B.V. Mehta said.
Imports of palm oil in October are likely to have declined to about 600,000 tonnes from 800,000 tonnes a year ago, while those of soyoil are likely to have risen more than 20% to around 425,000 tonnes, Mehta told Informist.
India's sunflower oil imports are likely to have increased by about 8% to 260,000 tonnes.
In the oil year ended October, India's edible oil imports would be around 15.2 million tonnes, compared with 16.0 million tonnes a year ago. However, if imports from Nepal, at around 700,000 tonnes, are taken into account, imports in 2024-25 (Nov-Oct) would be roughly the same as last year, Mehta said. Nepal exports edible oil to India under the South Asia Free Trade Area (SAFTA) agreement at zero duty.
The SEA will publish official figures of India's edible oil imports for October and for 2024-25 around the middle of the current month. End
