MUMBAI – The Telangana government has requested the central government to direct the Cotton Corp. of India to increase its estimated average cotton yield for the state from 700 kilograms per acre (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) to 1,174 kg per acre. The state's agriculture department had finalised the average yield at 1,174 kg per acre. However, the Cotton Corp. of India reduced the figure to 700 kg per acre for procurement purposes, Minister for Agriculture, Marketing, Cooperation and Handlooms, and Textiles of Telangana Tummala Nageswara Rao said. He conveyed this concern in a letter to Union Minister for Textiles Giriraj Singh.

According to the letter dated Sunday, the state's agriculture department collected yield estimates from 30 district collectors, and based on their feedback, the Director of Agriculture declared the average cotton yield for the 2025–26 season at 1,174 kg per acre. This figure was subsequently communicated to the Cotton Corp. of India.

The letter further said cotton procurement in Telangana began on Oct. 21 and, as of Saturday, the Cotton Corp. of India had procured 6,680 tonnes cotton, disbursing INR 150 million to farmers in the state. The procurement has been done on the basis of average yield of 1,174 kg per acre, it pointed out.

However, after 13 days of procurement, the average yield was reduced to 700 kg, which, "will create huge commotion among farmers who are already suffering damage to cotton crop due to recent Montha cyclone," the letter said.

Earlier, as reported by Informist on Oct. 27, the Telangana government had requested the Centre to persuade Cotton Corp. of India to procure cotton from the state despite the crop having moisture levels higher than the prescribed limit. The moisture content of kapas or seed cotton grown in the state typically ranges between 12% and 20% during Oct–Nov, whereas Cotton Corp. is currently procuring cotton only with moisture content between 8% and 12%.  End
