MUMBAI – India's edible oil imports in October are estimated at 1.28 million tonnes, down significantly by 20% on month as imports of palm oil, soyoil and sunflower oil fell. Total imports of edible oil are expected to fall 10% on year in October, according to estimates by GGN Research accessed by Informist.

In September, the country had imported 1.60 million tonnes of edible oil, with total vegetable oil imports at 1.64 million tonnes, according to data from The Solvent Extractors' Association of India. In the first 11 months of the oil year 2024-25 (Nov-Oct), total vegetable oil imports were at 14.3 million tonnes, down 3% from 14.8 million tonnes a year ago, the association said. Going by the October estimate, India's import of edible oils is expected to have fallen 4% to 15.26 million tonnes in oil year 2024-25, compared to 15.96 million tonnes the previous year, according to GGN research.

India's palm oil imports are estimated to have dropped to a five-month low of 599,000 tonnes in October, down 28% from the previous month and down 29% from last year, according to GGN Research. "Soyoil imports fell significantly by 17% on month to 415,000 tonnes in October, but rose 21% on a yearly basis," said Rajesh Patel, managing partner at GGN research.

Sunflower oil imports in October are estimated to have decreased 5% on month to 258,000 tonnes. However, on a yearly basis, imports of sunflower oil rose 8%, according to the data. In September, sunflower oil imports were the highest in eight months at 272,000 tonnes, so these stocks were carried forward in October.

As of Nov. 1, vessels carrying a total of 350,000 tonnes of edible oil are in line to arrive or discharge at Indian ports in the next few days. Of the total, 167,000 tonnes are palm oil, 156,000 tonnes soyoil, and 27,000 tonnes sunflower oil, according to GGN Research.
