NEW DELHI – Ex-mill prices of sugar remained steady in key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, traders said. Prices are likely to remain range-bound through November as the lower sales quota set by the government broadly matches the subdued demand expected during the month, they added.

The government has set the domestic sugar sales quota for November at 2.0 million tonnes, 16.7% lower than 2.4 million tonnes in October and down slightly over 9% from 2.2 million tonnes in November last year. In October, sugar purchases were low despite the festival of Diwali.

The government's sales quota for November is below the market's expectation of a quota of 2.20-2.25 million tonnes. The sugar industry had expected the quota to be lower than in the previous month, because of lower demand from institutional and bulk buyers. Traders expect demand from households to support sugar prices during the first week of November, after which demand will soften as most households stock up on sugar at the start of the month, according to Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association.

Sugar prices were largely steady in Maharashtra last week and will continue to remain range-bound in the coming days, Kuvadia said.

Amid the expectations of lower demand, the government has reduced the sales quota for all major sugar-producing states. The quota for Maharashtra in November is lower by over 19% on month at 585,902 tonnes. The sales quota allocated by the government for Uttar Pradesh is over 22% lower than in October at 736,093 tonnes, and the sales quota for Karnataka has been cut by nearly 8% on month to 249,927 tonnes, according to a notification from the Department of Food and Public Distribution. The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,850-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,870-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 4,075-INR 4,137 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,925-INR 3,940 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1912 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was flat at 14.43 cents per pound.  End
