NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of turmeric declined while those of jeera and coriander rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Monday. Turmeric prices fell due to profit booking but are expected to resume their upward trend on strong demand ahead of the wedding season, analysts said. Jeera prices rose on low arrivals while coriander were up on firm sentiment in spot markets, they added.
The most-active December contract of TURMERIC fell 1.4% to INR 14,690 per 100 kilograms because of profit-booking, analysts said. However, the fall is expected to be limited because of concerns over possible yield losses in key producing states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana due to adverse weather conditions, as well as seasonal demand during the November–December wedding period, SMC Global Securities said. Ongoing festive and wedding-related purchases, along with expectations of lower yields, are likely to keep sentiment positive in the near term despite tight supplies, the brokerage added.
The most-active December of JEERA rose 0.8% to INR 20,340 per 100 kg on selective buying amid low arrivals, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Prices are expected to find near-term support as demand picks up ahead of the wedding season, though the overall market trend will depend on the progress of rabi sowing in the coming weeks, SMC Global said. While wedding season demand may offer short-term support, a sharp rally is unlikely due to ample carry-forward stocks, Kedia Advisory noted. SMC Global added that the long-term bullish outlook remains limited due to persistently high inventories.
The most-active November contract of CORIANDER rose 0.5% to INR 8,316 per 100 kg because of firm sentiment in the spot market and steady buying interest, SMC Global said. Expectations of higher demand during the wedding season are likely to lend further support and limit any significant downside in the near term, the brokerage added.
