MUMBAI – Prices of chana rose, while those of tur and masur were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of chana were supported by the government's imposition of a 30% import duty on yellow peas, traders said. Prices of tur were steady as demand for the legume matched its supply, while prices of masur were unchanged due to a lack of cues, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 100 from Wednesday to INR 5,950-INR 6,000 per 100 kg, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader. Prices rose after the government late Wednesday announced a 30% import duty on yellow peas, he said. The duty will be levied on yellow pea shipments with a bill lading date on or after Saturday, according to the government notification. The import duty will be effective Saturday, it said. Yellow peas are used as a cheaper alternative to chana. Previously, imports of the legume were duty-free.

Though the market sentiment saw an immediate boost following the announcement, a longer rally in prices is unlikely due to ample availability of imports of both chana and yellow peas, Kakani said. The country had imported a large amount of yellow peas during the period when they did not attract any duty, so prices are likely to remain largely subdued till that imported stock runs out, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi rose by INR 75 from the previous day to INR 6,000-INR 6,050 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 6,200-INR 7,300 per 100 kg, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. Three to four trucks carrying 20,000-25,000 kilogram each arrived in the market, he said. Prices are steady as demand for the legume is on par with its supply, he said. Though yellow peas are also used as a cheaper alternative to chana, the substitution is not as high as it is for chana, he said. As such, the announcement of duty on yellow peas did not have any effect on tur prices, he said.

Prices of tur are likely to remain largely range-bound in the near term, Srinivas said. Though prices could have risen due to reports of crop damage due to excessive rainfall in key-producing states, Maharashtra and Karnataka, the availability of ample tur imports is keeping prices in control, he said. The market will monitor the progress in harvest of the kharif tur crop, which is likely to be delayed slightly due to unfavourable weather even after the southwest monsoon has wrapped up, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,550-INR 7,650 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,950-INR 6,000 per 100 kg, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Prices are steady due to a lack of fresh cues. The government's stock of masur is keeping prices steady amid a lack of arrivals and insufficient stocks with stockists, he said. The government has been offloading masur in small quantities, and will continue doing so in the medium term, he said.

Prices of the choti variety of masur at Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, remained steady at INR 5,800-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, the association said. Prices of the moti variety in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 7,200-INR 7,800 per 100 kg.  End
