MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric rose while those of jeera and coriander fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Thursday. Prices of turmeric rose on fears of crop loss in key producing states Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, which were hit by the cyclone "Montha", analysts said. Prices of jeera fell on weak market sentiment, while prices of coriander fell tracking subdued demand in spot markets, they said.
The most-active December contract of TURMERIC rose 2.3% to INR 15,050 per 100 kilograms due to ongoing weather abnormalities in major producing states such as Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, analysts at SMC Global said. Both states have been hit by the cyclone "Montha", which caused extremely heavy rainfall over most parts of the states in the first half of the week.
These unfavourable weather conditions are likely to have damaged the standing turmeric crop, potentially reducing its yield, SMC Global said. High humidity has also made preservation of the harvested turmeric crop difficult, adding to market concerns, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Prices are expected to remain supported in the near term due to the upcoming wedding season, which is likely to lift demand further, the brokerage said.
The most-active December contract of JEERA was down 0.2% at INR 20,160 per 100 kg due to weak market sentiment with ample availability of stocks, SMC Global said. The decline was further driven by subdued export demand and comfortable domestic supplies, Kedia Advisory said. Though prices could be supported in the near term as demand is expected to rise ahead of the wedding season, the overall market trend will depend on the progress of sowing during the rabi season in the coming days, the brokerage said. P
The most-active November contract of CORIANDER fell nearly 1% to INR 8,160 per 100 kg tracking a fall in prices in the spot markets due to subdued demand, analysts said. However, the downside could be limited by an anticipated rise in festival demand, SMC Global said. Firm spot market cues and steady buying interest are likely to keep prices supported in the medium term, it said.
