MUMBAI – Prices of chana and urad were steady, while prices of tur were mixed in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices remained unchanged amid limited demand from millers, they said. Tur prices were steady in some markets while falling in others due to a decline in demand, they said. Urad prices were steady as demand for the legume was on par with supply, they said.
CHANA prices at Indore in Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 5,850-INR 5,900 per 100 kg, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader. Though there was demand for the legume, it was not enough to lift prices, he said. Currently, millers are making only need-based purchases, keeping prices flat, he said.
The upcoming shipments of Australian chana, which is cheaper than the domestic variety, are likely to weigh on prices in the near term, Kakani said. However, reports of crop damage due to unfavourable weather in key producing regions of Australia could keep domestic prices from falling sharply, he said.
Chana prices in Delhi remained steady at INR 5,975 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices at Akola in Maharashtra fell by INR 50 from Tuesday to INR 7,300-INR 7,325 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices fell due to a drop in demand, he said. Prices are likely to fluctuate in a narrow range of INR 50-INR 100 per 100 kg in the short term, as the market awaits the harvest and arrival of the new crop, he said.
The harvest of the kharif tur crop has been delayed in Maharashtra and Karnataka due to excessive rainfall in the last leg of the southwest monsoon, Kedia said. The lack of continuous sunshine halted further crop development, he said. "The crops are currently in the flowering stage, so harvest may get delayed by 15 days or so," he said. Arrivals of the new crop in Maharashtra are likely to begin in mid-December, against the normal period of November-end.
However, tur prices remained steady in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, at INR 7,600-INR 7,700 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
URAD prices at Chandausi in Uttar Pradesh were steady at INR 7,050 per 100 kg, traders said. Urad prices in Rajasthan's Jaipur also remained steady at INR 6,400-7,200 per 100 kg. Prices were steady as demand for the legume matched its supply, traders said.
Urad prices are likely to remain range-bound in the near term due to mixed signals. The market is monitoring the new arrivals from Chandausi and Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, the association said in its weekly report on Monday. Traders have reported that around half the urad crop was damaged due to heavy rainfall, but the quality of the remaining crop is healthy, the association said. The market is not expecting any major surplus arrivals from Myanmar and Brazil. End
