MUMBAI – India's soymeal exports in September fell nearly 17% on year to 165,000 tonnes, the Soybean Processors Association of India said Wednesday. Cumulative exports of soymeal in edible oil year 2024–25 (Oct-Sept), fell to 2.02 million tonnes from 2.28 million tonnes in the same period a year ago, data from SOPA showed.

India exported soymeal to more than 70 countries from October to September, with Bangladesh, Nepal, Germany, France, Japan, and Kenya being the top buyers, according to the association. Soymeal production in September declined to 671,000 tonnes from 710,000 tonnes a year ago. Output during Oct-Sept fell to 8.96 million tonnes from 9.67 million tonnes a year ago.

Soybean arrivals in September were reported at 400,000 tonnes, lower than 800,000 tonnes a year ago. The arrivals in Oct–Sept fell to 10.3 million tonnes from 12.1 million tonnes a year ago, SOPA said.

Soybean crushing during Oct-Sept was 11.3 million tonnes, down from 12.2 million tonnes a year ago, SOPA estimates showed. Total soybean stocks at the end of September with agencies, oil mills, traders, and farmers were at 466,000 tonnes, down from 1.34 million tonnes a month ago, SOPA data showed. Soybean stocks with farmers, traders, and processing plants were at 442,000 tonnes as of September end and government agencies--National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India and National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India--were about 24,000 tonnes as of Oct. 14, SOPA said.

Meanwhile, soymeal stock at the end of September fell to 68,000 tonnes from 113,000 tonnes in August. The fall in soymeal stock can be attributed to lower soybean arrivals and crushing.

Soybean is crushed to extract soyoil, leaving the by-product soymeal. This is primarily used as poultry and livestock feed. Indian soymeal is non-genetically modified and rich in protein, making it attractive in global feed markets. However, competitive pressure from cheaper feed alternatives such as distiller's dried grains with solubles weigh on exports. India is among the largest importers of soyoil and an exporter of soymeal.  End
