MUMBAI – The area sown under rabi crops in Maharashtra reached 34,285 hectares as of Monday, down over 90% from 353,760 hectares sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Excessive rainfall in the state during the last leg of the southwest monsoon has led to a delay in the harvest of kharif crops, which in turn led to a fall in rabi acreage from the previous year.
The acreage under jowar was down to 26,535 hectares from 270,730 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under maize fell to 5,221 hectares from 43,307 hectares last year, and that of wheat also slipped to 1,064 hectares from 3,149 hectares a year ago.
The total area sown under all pulses so far was 1,385 hectares, down from 35,418 hectares a year ago. Chana acreage fell to 1,276 hectares from 33,380 hectares last year. The total area sown under all oilseeds was 75 hectares, down from 1,072 hectares sown in the previous year.
Rabi crops are sown after the southwest monsoon and harvested between January and April in the state. Besides chana, other major rabi crops in the state are wheat, jowar, barley, oats, mustard and peas.
The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 91.2% of the live storage capacity as of Wednesday, compared with 87.5% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department. End
