Gujarat final kharif area up tad on yr at 8.49 mln ha as of Tue

MUMBAI – The sowing of kharif crops in Gujarat reached 8.49 million hectares as of Tuesday, marginally up from 8.48 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to the final kharif acreage report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 8.56 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, over 99% was covered during the kharif season this year. 

 

Under major cereal crops, paddy acreage rose to 905,382 hectares from 886,779 hectares last year, the report showed. Maize acreage fell to 280,978 hectares from 286,060 hectares last year, while the area sown under bajra rose to 172,588 hectares from 168,315 hectares a year ago.

 

Under pulses, moong acreage fell to 48,844 hectares from 55,222 hectares in the corresponding year. The acreage under tur rose to 310,247 hectares from 244,250 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under urad fell marginally to 83,627 hectares from 83,859 hectares a year ago. 

 

The area sown under groundnut rose to 2.20 million hectares from 1.91 million hectares in the corresponding year, the report said. The area sown under soybean fell to 277,362 hectares from 300,773 hectares a year ago. Under sesame, the acreage fell to 41,006 hectares from 49,451 hectares a year ago, while that of castor rose to 683,080 hectares from 646,334 hectares last year. The total area sown under oilseeds rose to 3.20 million hectares from 2.91 million hectares sown a year ago. 

 

Cotton acreage fell to 2.10 million hectares from 2.37 million hectares a year ago, the report said. The area under vegetables also rose to 271,763 hectares from 269,742 hectares last year.  End
