NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all the spices traded on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange rose Tuesday. Turmeric prices have been rising on high demand amid limited supplies, analysts said. Jeera was up following a sharp rise in spot prices in domestic mandis amid low arrivals. Coriander prices were also up following strong spot prices, supported by rising buying interest, they said. Prices of all spices are also supported by the upcoming wedding season, which begins November and extends up to February.
The most-active December contract of TURMERIC rose 2.55% to INR 14,900 per 100 kilograms, supported by consistent buying interest amid tight supply conditions, SMC Global Securities said. Anticipation of robust demand during the wedding season is likely to keep the market's upward momentum intact, the brokerage said. Moreover, excessive rainfall in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, along with continuous showers in Erode, Tamil Nadu, has led to an outbreak of disease in standing turmeric crop and raised concern about its preservation amid high humidity, which is also pushing up prices, Kedia Advisory said.
The most-active November contract of JEERA rose 0.4% to INR 20,270 per 100 kg supported by a sharp rise in spot prices at the benchmark Unjha market in Gujarat amid lower local arrivals, analysts at SMC Global said. Demand for the wedding season is also providing near-term support, they said. However, the prospects for a sustained long-term bullish trend appear limited, given the backdrop of substantial carryover stocks.
The most-active November contract of CORIANDER rose 1.8% to INR 8,202 per 100 kg supported by firm spot prices on increased buying interest, analysts said. The rising demand for the upcoming wedding season is also keeping prices firm, they said. However, weak export demand is likely to keep overall market sentiment subdued, SMC Global said.
