MUMBAI – Prices of wheat, maize, and rice were steady across the country's key spot markets Tuesday due to lack of fresh cues, traders said. However, prices of maize are likely to fall in the near-term due to rise in arrivals and increased moisture in the grain, they said. Markets in Kota, Rajasthan, were closed due to heavy rainfall.
Prices of WHEAT at the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai remained steady at INR 2,800-NR 2,825 per 100 kg due to lack of fresh cues, wholesale trader Devendra Vora said. Wheat prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were also steady at INR 2,750 per 100 kg, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. Vora said wheat prices will remain steady till the end of this year as both demand and supply are at par.
"Traders in Rajasthan are cautious about prices, production, and the damage to wheat crop due to unfavourable weather conditions," local trader Aniket Mehta said. Wheat sowing in Rajasthan has begun. The area under wheat in Rajasthan as of Monday was 86,633 hectares, up 129% from 37,778 hectares last year.
Moreover, wheat production in Punjab is likely to fall 5-15% in the ongoing crop year as recent floods, which submerged vast stretches of farmland, have eroded fertile top soil and deposited thick layers of sand and silt. The Punjab government estimates a fall of 5-7% in wheat production during the current rabi marketing season. As of Friday, wheat acreage across the country was down 47% on year at 35,000 hectares, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
Prices of MAIZE in Indore remained unchanged at INR 1,875 per 100 kg. Prices of maize have fallen below minimum support price of INR 2,400 per 100 kg because of higher moisture content in the grain, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. He expects prices to fall further by INR 100 per 100 kg. Prices of maize at Davanagere in Karnataka were steady at INR 1,600-INR 1,900 per 100 kg, local trader Shiva Kumar said. Arrivals in Karnataka were also steady at 10,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg). Kumar also expects prices to decline further by INR 100 per 100 kg as arrivals increase in the coming days. He expects arrivals to rise significantly to around 50,000 bags in the near-term.
Prices of major RICE varieties were unchanged across key markets due to lack of fresh cues. Basmati rice varieties, 1401 and 1121, were unchanged at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, in the Vashi market, Vora said. The price of 5% broken rice in Vashi was unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, he said. Prices of rice are expected to remain steady till the end of the year, he added.
Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati rice, remained steady at INR 5,000 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a local trader. Price of sona masoori rice is likely to remain steady till December as the market is in balance, he said.
"Heavy rain and flooding in Punjab and Haryana have severely damaged paddy and other crops, leading to large-scale farmer losses and government compensation measures," Kochar said. "Basmati crops in Haryana have suffered an estimated 10-25?mage," he added. End
