MUMBAI – Heavy rainfall is likely to continue over parts of southern and eastern India as the cyclonic storm 'Montha' has intensified into a severe cyclone, the India Meteorological Department said. Heavy showers are also seen over northwest and western India due to the presence of multiple weather systems.
The weather department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over Odisha till Wednesday. It has also issued a red alert for extreme showers over Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh for Tuesday. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of southern India till Wednesday, and eastern and central India till Friday. The weather bureau has issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall over Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for Wednesday. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeds 115.6 millimetres and goes up to 204.4 millimetres.
The severe cyclonic storm will continue to move north northwestwards and cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90–100 km per hour, gusting to 110 km per hour, the weather bureau said.
The agromet department of the weather body has asked farmers in Andhra Pradesh to postpone harvesting of kharif crops and drain excess water from fields. It also said to avoid sowing rabi crops until the soil moisture reaches "optimum level". For Kerala and Telangana, the department has asked farmers to immediately harvest the matured rice crop and cotton crop, respectively.
The department also said that very heavy rainfall is likely over eastern Uttar Pradesh Thursday and Friday. It is likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 km per hour Thursday. These weather conditions are due to a western disturbance lying as a trough in the middle tropospheric westerlies.
Heavy rainfall is likely over most parts of northeast India till the weekend with very heavy rainfall likely over Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh on Friday and Saturday, the department said. Northeast India is also expected to witness thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds with speed reaching 30–40 km per hour from Thursday to Saturday, the department said.
Very heavy rainfall is likely over Saurashtra and Kutch in Gujarat till Friday, the department said. Heavy rainfall is likely over Konkan, Goa, and Marathawada till Wednesday and over central Maharashtra on Wednesday. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speed reaching 30-40 km per hour are likely over the region during the next five days.
The above weather conditions over western India are caused by a depression over eastcentral Arabian Sea, the agency said. It expects the weather system to move nearly north-northeastwards across the eastcentral Arabian Sea during the next 36 hours. End
