MUMBAI – Farmers across the country have sown rabi crops over 2.75 million hectares as of Friday, up 2% on year from 2.69 million hectares sown in the same period last year, according to the data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Monday.

 

The acreage under wheat, the major rabi crop, however fell 47% on year to 35,000 hectares, according to the ministry data. Wheat is only grown in the rabi season in India. Acreage of rabi paddy was 241,000 hectares, down 15% from the corresponding period last year. 

 

The area under coarse cereals, promoted as "Shri Anna" by the government, was up 186% on year at 20,000 hectares, the data showed. The area sown under jowar was 17,000 hectares, up a whopping 467% on year. Maize acreage was at 2,000 hectares as of Friday.

 

The total area sown under all pulses in the country so far in the 2025-26 season was 450,000 hectares, up 3% on year from 438,000 hectares sown last year. Among pulses, the acreage of chana was 319,000 hectares, up 10.4% on year from 289,000 hectares sown last year. Chana is the largest legume, both in terms of acreage and production, sown during the rabi season. Area sown under masur was 49,000 hectares, down 29% on year from 69,000 hectares sown last year. Area under urad rose 133% on year to 7,000 hectares. The acreage under moong was 1,000 hectares, unchanged from the previous year.

 

The area under oilseeds was 2.0 million hectares, up 5.4% on year from 1.90 million hectares sown last year. Area sown under groundnut was 10,000 hectares, down 29% on year. Mustard acreage was 1.98 million hectares, up 6% on year.
