Govt approves INR 151 bln for procurement of kharif pulses, soybean in 4 states

NEW DELHI – To boost farmers' income and encourage cultivation of oilseeds and pulses, the government approved INR 150.96 billion to undertake procurement operations across four states – Maharashtra, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha – for kharif 2025–26 season, the agriculture ministry said in a release. Agencies such as the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India and the National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India will buy soybean, moong, urad and arhar from farmers, it said.
The government has earmarked most funds for procurement from Maharashtra with 33,000 tonnes of moong to be bought with INR 2.89 billion, 325,680 tonnes urad with INR 25.40 billion and 1.85 million tonnes soybean with INR 98.60 billion.
In Telengana, the government has earmarked INR 384 million to buy 4,430 tonnes moong, covering 25% of the state's output. Meanwhile, for urad, the government has ensured "100% procurement" and "25% procurement" for soybean in the state.
In Madhya Pradesh, 2.22 million tonnes of soybean will be bought with an allocated INR 17.75 billion. In Odisha, the government aims to buy 18,470 tonnes of arhar, representing 100% of the state's production, with a budget allocation of INR 1.48 billion.
"These approvals have been granted to ensure that farmers receive better returns for their produce and to safeguard their incomes while protecting them from market fluctuations — an important step toward building an 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'", Farm Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said in the release. End
