MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar were steady in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and up in Maharashtra, said traders. Prices rose in Maharashtra as demand is likely to increase at the beginning of November, they said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as they are yet to achieve the October sales quota, said Naresh Gupta a trader from north India. "Mills are left with ample stock, and they are unlikely to meet the monthly sales quota this time," Gupta said. Moreover, traders are buying on a day-to-day basis instead of keeping stocks in the pipeline as there is no demand from bulk consumers of sugar at the moment, he said.
In Maharashtra, prices rose on Friday in anticipation of increase in demand at the start of next month, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Demand from households is expected in the first week of November, after which demand will soften as most households stock up sugar at the start of the month, he said.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,850-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,870-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Up INR 25 at INR 4,075-INR 4,137 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Up INR 25 at INR 3,925-INR 3,940 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 2048 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was down nearly 4% at 14.42 cents per pound. UNICA, Brazil's sugar industry association, said sugar output of the country's centre-south region in the first half of September rose by 15.7% on year to 3.6 million tonnes. Higher availability is bearish for global sugar prices. End
