Prices steady, soybean may fall on competition from maize

NEW DELHI – Mustard prices held steady in key domestic spot markets Monday, and groundnut was unchanged in Madhya Pradesh's Ratlam, traders said. Soybean prices are likely to fall due to increased output and competition from maize, they added.
MUSTARD prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 7,150-INR 7,175 per 100 kg, the same as that of Saturday, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of mustard seed across the country stood at 250,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), up 50,000 bags from Friday, according to GGN Research.
In Kota, Rajasthan, mustard seed prices held steady at INR 6,500 per 100 kg, Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader, said. Arrivals also held steady at 6,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he added. "The rains are proving to be beneficial for the crop," a local trader said. Rainfall provides essential moisture for the germination and early growth of the mustard crop, which is typically sown in the first half of October.
SOYBEAN prices in Kota were steady at INR 4,400 per 100 kg, Sameriya said. Arrivals stood at 40,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he added. With the increase in output, soybean prices may drop to INR 4,000 per 100 kg, market participants said. Demand from millers remained weak, a trader from Kota said.
In Ratlam, soybean prices stood at INR 2,500-INR 4,600 per 100 kg, depending on the variety, Narendra Porwal, a local trader, said. Arrivals stood at 5,200 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), up 200 bags from Friday, he added. Soybean prices are likely to fall as it faces competition from maize, traders said. In comparison to soybean, maize gives out more yield and is used to produce ethanol, market participants said.
GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam held steady and traded in the range of INR 2,400-INR 5,100 per 100 kg, depending on the variety, Porwal said. Arrivals stood at 26,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), down 18,000 bags from Friday, he added. Arrivals fell owing to heavy rainfall in the state, Porwal said.
In Bikaner, groundnut seeds traded at INR 4,000 per 100 kg, a local trader said.
