NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all the spices traded on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange rose on Monday. Turmeric prices were up on rise in demand amid limited supplies. Jeera was up on fall in arrivals and demand ahead of upcoming marriage season. Coriander prices were also up on purchases ahead of the marriage season, analysts said. The main wedding season in India begins November and extends up to February.
The most-active December contract of TURMERIC rose 0.8% to INR 14,740 per 100 kilograms, supported by robust buying interest amid constrained supply, SMC Global Securities said. Excessive rainfall in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, along with continuous showers in Erode, Tamil Nadu, has led to outbreak of diseases and raised concern about preservation of crop amid high humidity, which is likely to keep prices firm, Kedia Advisory said in a note. The upward momentum is likely to continue in anticipation of strong demand during the upcoming marriage season, analysts said.
The most-active November contract of JEERA rose 4% to INR 20,295 per 100 kg due to fall in arrivals, analysts at SMC Global said. Moreover, demand for the upcoming marriage season is providing near-term support, they said. Despite low arrivals lending some support to prices, the overall market sentiment remains weak due to substantial carry-over stocks, they said.
The most-active November contract of CORIANDER rose almost 1% to INR 8,060 per 100 kg due to demand from the upcoming marriage season, analysts said. However, the rise in prices is likely to be limited in absence of strong exports, SMC Global said.
