NEW DELHI – The International Grains Council has raised its global food grain production forecast for 2025-26 by 13 million tonnes to 2.42 billion tonnes, according to its monthly report released Thursday. This is the third consecutive upward revision in the council's estimate, driven mainly by higher wheat and barley production and better-than-expected yields of these crops by key producers.

The forecast for global food grain ending stocks for the year have been raised by 12 million tonnes from last month's estimate to a three-year high of 618 million tonnes, as per the report. The increase is largely attributed to carry-over inventories among exporters. The outlook for global grain trade was also revised slightly upward to 440 million tonnes, mainly due to stronger wheat shipments.

Global wheat production estimates have been raised to 827 million tonnes from 819 million tonnes the previous month. This comes on expectations of increased wheat production from major producers, which include Argentina, the European Union, Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, and the USA, the council said. Furthermore, the forecast for carryover stocks of wheat has also increased to 275 million tonnes from the earlier 270 million tonnes, according to the report. The estimate for global wheat consumption is at 820 million tonnes, up from 819 million tonnes estimated in September.

The global grain consumption for 2025-26 is expected to reach a new peak at 2.4 billion tonnes, up from 2.39 billion tonnes estimated in September. The rise comes on the back of growth in food, feed, and industrial usage of wheat, maize, and barley.

The global maize production is estimated to remain unchanged at 1.30 billion tonnes, the same as that of September, according to the report. However, the forecast for global maize consumption is expected at 1.29 billion tonnes, slightly higher than the previous month's estimate.

The global rice production for the year is estimated to decrease by 2 million tonnes to 542 million tonnes while the global consumption is kept unchanged at 540 million tonnes, the report said.

World soybean production for the year has been cut slightly to 428 million tonnes from 429 million tonnes estimated in the previous month. Global consumption in 2025-26 is expected to decline to 430 million tonnes from 431 million tonnes the previous month. Soybean trade is expected to rise further, at 187 million tonnes, up 2 million tonnes from the previous month, led by boosted demand from Asia, the council said.  End
