MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh fell as there was limited demand after the Diwali festival and also as mills were in a hurry to meet the sales quota for the month, said traders. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady, they said.

In Uttar Pradesh, mills cut prices by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg due to limited buying after Diwali, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Traders are buying on a day-to-day basis instead of keeping stocks in the pipeline as there is no demand from bulk consumers of sugar at the moment, he said.

Moreover, mills are in a hurry to offload the stocks and meet the sales quota, so they cut prices to sell the stocks. "Mills are left with ample stock, and they are unlikely to meet the monthly sales quota this time," Gupta said.

In Maharashtra, prices were steady on Friday due to sluggish demand, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to fall further, Kuvadia said.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down INR 10-INR 15 at INR 3,850-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 10-INR 15 at INR 3,870-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 4,050-INR 4,112 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,900-INR 3,940 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1842 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was down 2% at 14.98 cents per pound. UNICA, a Brazilian sugar industry association, said Brazil's centre-south region sugar output in the first half of September rose by 15.7% on year to 3.6 million tonnes. Higher availability is bearish for global sugar prices.  End
