MUMBAI – Prices of wheat, rice, and maize were steady in key markets across India Friday for lack of new cues, traders said. They expect maize prices to remain below the minimum support price till December due to high moisture content in the grain and higher output.

Prices of MAIZE at Davanagere in Karnataka were largely steady at INR 1,600–INR 2,100 per 100 kilograms, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals fell slightly from the previous day to 7,000-8,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg) due to heavy rainfall, he said. Arrivals will increase after a week from the time when rainfall stops as farmers need to dry the grain before selling it, Kumar said. Usually, arrivals of the grain are around 20,000 bags after the harvest.

Maize prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady from the previous day at INR 2,000 per 100 kg, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. He expects prices to remain in a downtrend till December. "Maize prices are down by INR 600-INR 700 (per 100 kg) compared to previous season," Kochar said.

Prices of the grain in key markets have fallen below the minimum support price on high moisture content of around 25-30% and increased output during the kharif season. The government has set the minimum support price of maize for the kharif marketing season 2025-26 (Oct-Sept) at INR 2,400 per 100 kg.

Prices of WHEAT at the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai remained steady at INR 2,800-NR 2,825 per 100 kg due to lack of fresh cues, wholesale trader Devendra Vora said. Wheat prices in Indore were also steady at INR 2,750 per 100 kg. Vora said wheat prices will remain steady in near term as both demand and supply are on a par. However, if the government comes up with open-market sales, then wheat prices are likely to fall by INR 200–INR 300 per 100 kg.

Prices of major RICE varieties across key markets were unchanged for lack of fresh cues. Basmati rice varieties, 1401 and 1121, were unchanged at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. The price of 5% broken rice in Vashi was unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, Vora said.

Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati rice, remained steady at INR 5,000 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada, said Ravi Shankar, a local trader. Sona masoori price is likely to remain steady till December as demand and supply are on a par, Shankar said.  End
