MUMBAI – Prices of tur rose in key markets Friday due to firm demand from millers after Diwali, traders said. They expect prices to remain in an uptrend due to a delayed harvest of the kharif crop amid heavy showers during September. Chana and masur prices were steady in key markets due to lack of fresh cues, traders said.

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, rose by INR 60 from Thursday to INR 6,200-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. Three to four trucks with 20,000-25,000 kg each arrived in the market, he said. Prices are supported by a rise in demand from millers, as they need to stock up their processing pipeline after remaining shut for Diwali since Saturday, he said.

Prices are also being supported by expectations of a delay in the harvest of the kharif crop, Srinivas said. Incessant rainfall in the second half of September in major producing regions delayed the flowering stage of the crop, which ultimately will delay its harvest, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,700-INR 7,800 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,700-INR 5,750 per 100 kg, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Though there is some demand for chana, it is not enough to raise prices, he said. Prices are likely to remain range-bound in the near term as the market will monitor the progress of chana sowing in the rabi season, he said. "Once there is a clear idea about sowing--whether it is progressing well or not, then prices might move," he said.

Mangal expects chana acreage to fall on year due to excessive rainfall. "More farmers might shift to wheat from chana because it rained a lot (this year)," he said. Excessive moisture in soil is unfavourable for sowing chana, he explained.

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,925-INR 5,975 per 100 kg, traders said.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,050 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Prices are steady as demand is on par with supply, he said. While prices should have risen due to a steep drop in arrivals and lack of stocks with stockists and traders, the government's sale of the legume is making up for it. The government has been offloading masur in small quantities, and will continue doing so in the medium term, he said.

Prices of the choti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, remained steady at INR 5,800-INR 6,150 per 100 kg, the association said. Prices of the moti variety in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 7,200-INR 8,000 per 100 kg.  End
