MUMBAI – India's natural gas production continued its negative trend, with output declining over 2% on year to 2.94 billion cubic meters in August, according to the Gas Exporting Countries Forum. The decline was due to a reduction in offshore gas output, which constitutes 73% of India's natural gas production, along with reduced production from the onshore Rajasthan field. India's natural gas production in Jan-Aug declined over 3% on year to 22.2 billion cubic meters, the intergovernmental organisation comprising the world's leading gas exporters said in its monthly report for October.

Global gas production in August rose 0.6% on year to 353 billion cubic meters. All gas-producing regions, except Eurasia and Europe, witnessed positive production growth, with North America, specifically the US, leading the growth. Europe recorded the largest output reduction due to lower gas production in Norway, the report said.

India's natural gas consumption in August rose 1.7% on year to 5.9 billion cubic meters, marking its first recovery after seven months of on-year decline. The fertiliser industry was the largest consumer of natural gas during the month, accounting for 30% of total demand, followed by city gas distribution at 24%, power generation at 11%, and refining at 8%, according to the report.

Aggregate gas consumption in some of the major gas-consuming countries, which account for 75% of global gas demand, increased 1.7% on year to 2.35 trillion cubic meters in the first eight months of 2025. The European Union, the UK, and North America recorded growth while Asia showed a decline, the report said.  End
