NEW DELHI – Mustard seed prices rose in Jaipur, Rajasthan, because of festival demand, traders said. Data on arrivals and prices of groundnut and soybean were unavailable as major markets across the country are closed for Diwali festival, they said.

MUSTARD seed prices in Jaipur were at INR 7,251 per 100 kg, up INR 51 from Friday, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. "Prices rose a bit over the weekend owing to Diwali festival demand," a trader said. Spot prices of mustard seed in Jaipur rose by 0.25% last week, SMC Research Edge said.

"Mustard prices are likely to rise by INR 200–INR 300," a trader from Kota's Swasthamsutra Oil Mill said. Prices are likely to rise as the arrivals will be lower in the market, he added. Mustard is a rabi crop, which is usually sown in the first half of October.

Mustard seed prices and arrivals in Rajasthan's Kota and Madhya Pradesh's Ratlam markets were not available as they are closed for Diwali, traders said.

Prices of SOYBEAN were not available across markets of Ratlam, Guna, and Kota as they are closed. Data on arrivals was also unavailable. Markets will remain shut till Thursday, traders said.

Prices of soybean are likely to recover in Madhya Pradesh, as the state government has implemented the Bhavantar Yojana, which will start from Saturday. Under the scheme, farmers in the state will be paid the difference between the selling price and the minimum support price. Madhya Pradesh is the largest soybean producing state in India.

However, farmers from other soybean producing states have expressed concern regarding the scheme. Farmers from Maharashtra's Vidharbha and Marathwada regions may face a loss, according to media reports. Soybean is the second major crop in Vidarbha and a key crop of Marathwada. Farmers in these regions are selling the crop at a loss due to unfavourable weather conditions which has affected the crop yield.

Prices and arrivals of GROUNDNUT were not available from Gujarat's Gondal mandi as it is shut on account of Diwali, traders said. Madhya Pradesh's Neemuch Mandi too was shut. Traders said the existing prices of lower quality groundnut were on a downtrend due to bumper arrivals. Prices are likely to fall further as demand from millers remains poor, a trader said.
