MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric and jeera rose while those of coriander fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Monday. Prices of turmeric rose on robust festival demand amid supply constraints, analysts said. Prices of jeera rose on short covering after recent declines while prices of coriander fell due to weak demand, they said.

The most-active December contract of TURMERIC rose 2.9% to INR 15,156 per 100 kilograms on robust demand for festivals and on constrained supply conditions, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. Prices are also being supported by reports of crop damage in key producing regions. The standing turmeric crop in Marathwada, Maharashtra, has been damaged by the excessive rainfall that battered the region in the second half of September, the brokerage said.

The market is closely monitoring weather conditions across south India, SMC Global said. For October, the India Meteorological Department has forecast above-normal rainfall for the country at 115% of the long-period average.

The most-active November contract of JEERA was up 0.2% at INR 19,270 per 100 kg on account of short-covering after recent declines, which had been triggered by subdued export demand following the end of the retail season, Kedia Advisory said in a note. The overall market sentiment remains weak owing to ample availability of stocks, SMC Global said. However, prices could be supported in the near term as demand is expected to rise ahead of the wedding season, which spans November and December, the brokerage said.

The most-active November contract of CORIANDER fell about 0.6% to INR 8,054 per 100 kg on subdued domestic demand, SMC Global said. However, the downside could be limited by an anticipated rise in festival demand, the brokerage said. In the medium term, export demand from West Asian markets is expected to play a key role in determining price trends, it said.
