NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of spices showed a divergent trend on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Thursday. While turmeric prices hit a four-month high on firm demand and bleak crop outlook, weak buying interest continued to weigh on coriander futures. Jeera contracts were flat on the exchange.
The most-active December contract of TURMERIC rose 5.5% to a four-month high of INR 14,668 per 100 kg, the highest since INR 14,714 per 100 kg on June 13. The price of the yellow spice has been rising due to high demand amid limited supply in domestic markets.
The contract is likely to "maintain its positive path," supported by strong festival demand and tight supply conditions, SMC Global Securities said. Additionally, reports of crop damage in Marathwada, Maharashtra, due to abnormal weather patterns are lending further support to prices. Going ahead, with festival demand expected to remain a key driver, prices are likely to "sustain the firm trend," SMC Global said.
The most-active November contract of CORIANDER fell 0.2% to INR 8,110 per 100 kg owing to softening buying interest in the domestic market. However, anticipated festive season demand is expected to provide some support to prices in the coming days, SMC Global said. Additionally, the overall market trend will be influenced by export demand from West Asia and Asian markets, which could play a key role in determining price direction going forward, it added.
The most-active November contract of JEERA was flat at INR 19,145 per 100 kg. Muted demand in local and global markets amid steady arrivals has been weighing on prices. The contract is likely to "move sideways" amid cautious purchases from stockists and any upward movement is expected to encounter resistance at higher levels, "reinforcing the prevailing bearish outlook", SMC Global said.
