NEW DELHI – The Cotton Association of India has retained its estimate for India's cotton production in the 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) season at 31.24 million bales where one bale equals 170 kg. The association updates its estimates almost every month, based on information from its members in 11 cotton-growing states and trade sources.
Production of cotton in the central zone, which includes Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh, is projected at 18.70 million bales in 2024-25, and in the north zone, comprising Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, it is estimated at 2.95 million bales, the data showed.
Production in the south zone, comprising Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, is estimated at 9.0 million bales, according to the association. Odisha and other states are likely to contribute 385,000 bales and 200,000 bales, respectively, to the country's total cotton production.
Total supply of cotton in the 2024-25 season is estimated at 39.26 million bales, against 38.05 million bales in the previous season. This includes production of 31.24 million bales, imports of 4.1 million bales, and opening stock of 3.9 million bales, the data showed.
The government has extended the suspension of 11% import duty on all varieties of cotton to Dec. 31 from Sept. 30. The move is aimed at protecting India's textile industry against the recently imposed 50% US tariff. The short-term waiver is meant to stabilise domestic prices of cotton, relieve cost pressures on mills, and strengthen the competitiveness of textile exporters amidst fierce rivalry from Bangladesh, Vietnam, and China.
The association has maintained its estimate for cotton consumption at 31.4 million bales, and exports at 1.8 million bales against 2.8 million bales the previous year. The association expects closing stocks at the end of September at 6.06 million bales, up from 3.9 million bales the previous year, the data showed.
