NEW DELHI/MUMBAI – India's oilmeal exports in September rose 40% on year to 299,252 tonnes, according to data released by The Solvent Extractors' Association of India Thursday. Oilmeal exports in Apr-Sept were 2.09 million tonnes, up marginally from 2.08 million tonnes a year ago.
Exports of soymeal in September rose nearly 37% on year to 81,851 tonnes from 59,818 tonnes a year ago. In Apr-Sept, soymeal exports dropped nearly 8% to 839,075 tonnes from 908,800 tonnes a year ago. Demand for Indian soymeal in world markets is poor with the commodity facing stiff competition from South American and North American producers. Domestically, soymeal is facing increased competition in the feed market from distiller's dried grains with solubles, the association said.
Exports of mustard meal rose over 46% on year to 192,262 tonnes in September. Exports during Apr-Sept rose to 1.1 million tonnes from 1.0 million tonnes a year ago. Exports of castorseed meal rose 9% on year to 24,133 tonnes in September, but these were down nearly 6% on year during Apr-Sept at 130,589 tonnes, the association said.
Exports of groundnut meal rose over 135% on year to 1,007 tonnes in September and were up 214% on year at 15,987 tonnes during Apr-Sept. Increase in production of groundnut for the past two years has lead to increased crushing and export of groundnut meal, the association said. As per the SEA Kharif Groundnut Crop Survey in Gujarat, area under groundnut cultivation has expanded approximately 300,000 hectares to 2.2 million hectares, the association said.
Exports of rice bran meal in September were down to zero from 141 tonnes a year ago. In Apr-Sept, too, there were no exports of rice bran meal, against 14,180 tonnes in the corresponding year-ago period. The government had, in July 2023, banned the export of de-oiled rice bran citing high domestic prices of cattle feed and milk products. The ban was intended to increase domestic availability of the product to help stabilise feed costs.
However, the government lifted the ban with effect from Oct. 3. The move is expected to benefit the rice-milling and solvent-extraction industry by opening up export opportunities while aiding farmers and processors to secure better realisation for by-products of rice bran oil extraction, the association said. "This will also boost the processing of rice bran and production of rice bran oil," it said.
In Apr-Sept, a total of 421,423 tonnes of oilmeal were exported from Kandla port in Gujarat, down from 682,785 tonnes a year ago, the association said. However, exports from Mundra port, also in Gujarat, were at 815,875 tonnes, up from 483,024 tonnes a year ago, it said. In the same period, exports from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Navi Mumbai rose to 333,847 tonnes from 339,120 tonnes a year ago, the association further said.
In Apr-Sept, India's oilmeal exports to Bangladesh fell almost 47% on year to 212,865 tonnes from 398,068 tonnes in the corresponding period last year, according to the data. Exports to South Korea fell over 35% on year to 232,274 tonnes. Oilmeal exports to Vietnam also fell to 100,552 tonnes from 131,606 tonnes a year ago, as per the data.
China imported 495,095 tonnes of oilmeal from India during Apr-Sept, compared to just 17,806 tonnes in the corresponding period a year ago. The country's imports consisted of 488,168 tonnes of rapeseed or mustard meal and 6,927 tonnes of castorseed meal. European countries were major importers of soybean meal from India, with Germany and France importing 143,039 tonnes and 56,959 tonnes, respectively, the association said.
The following table details exports of various oilmeals, in tonnes, in September and Apr-Sept, compared with the year-ago numbers, according to the latest data from SEA, with the year-on-year change in percentage terms:
