--IMD: See very heavy rain over Tamil Nadu, Kerala till Friday 

 

MUMBAI – The northeast monsoon set in over south India Thursday, the India Meteorological Department said in a release. This is likely to result in very heavy rainfall over Kerala and Tamil Nadu till Friday.

 

An upper-air cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep area is likely to intensify into a low pressure area over the same region around Saturday, the weather department said. The low-pressure area is likely to intensify into a depression in the subsequent 48 hours.

 

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is likely over most parts of south India till Wednesday. The weather department has issued an orange alert in south India till Friday. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeding 115.6 millimetres and going up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours is expected.

 

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry during the next seven days, the weather department said. It has advised farmers in the region to harvest and store rice and groundnut in a safe place and provide adequate drainage facilities in fields of rice, cotton, and vegetables.  End
