NEW DELHI – Mustard seed prices were up Wednesday because of strong demand from millers and soybean prices were up on demand from the dairy sector, traders said. Groundnut prices are likely to fall in the coming days as the new crop has started arriving in the market. Soybean prices are also likely to face downward pressure, traders added.

MUSTARD prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, rose INR 25 to INR 7,075-INR 7,100 per 100 kg, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of mustard seed across the country stood at 265,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), down 20,000 bags from the previous day, as per GGN Research. In Kota, Rajasthan, mustard prices rose INR 50 to INR 6,400 per 100 kg, Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader said. Arrivals stood at 6,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), down 1,000 bags from the previous day, he added. Prices are up as quality of arrivals coming into the market is better, he added.

In Guna, Madhya Pradesh, prices rose by INR 100 to INR 6,300 per 100 kg, according to Ramdana and Sons, a local trading agency. Arrivals were steady at 200 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), a trader with the agency said. Prices rose due to strong demand from millers, market participants said. "Demand from oil refiners is picking up," a local trader from Guna said.

Prices of SOYBEAN in Kota rose INR 20 to INR 4,370 per 100 kg, Sameriya said. Arrivals stood at 18,000 bags (1 bag = 50 g), same as the previous day, he added. Demand from the dairy sector remains strong, he added. Dairy companies use soybean to manufacture products like soymilk and tofu.

In Guna, soybean traded in the range of INR 4,200-INR 4,500 per 100 kg, up INR 100 from the previous day, Ramdana and Sons said. Arrivals were steady at 800 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), the agency trader said. "Miller demand has improved," a trader from Ratlam said.

Soybean continues to sell below its minimum support price of INR 5,328 per 100 kg, market participants said. "If the current market trend continues, market prices may fall to as low as INR 4,000 (per 100 kg)," a trader from Kota said. Demand for soymeal remains depressed, market participants said. Soymeal is a protein-rich byproduct of soybean oil extraction, which is used for cattle feed.

GROUNDNUT prices in Visavadar, Gujarat, were at INR 3,500-INR 7,500 per 100 kg, depending on the variety, Ashok Virvani, a local trader said. Arrivals stood at 100,000 kg, he added. Prices of groundnut are likely to fall in the coming future as the new harvest has started coming in the markets, Virvani said. In Bikaner, Rajasthan, prices of general quality groundnut stood at INR 5,200 per 100 kg, an exporting agency said. In Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh, groundnut traded in the range of INR 3,300- INR 5,300 per 100 kg, depending on the variety, traders said. The premium red variety of groundnut are trading at a profitable price owing to good quality arrivals, traders added. Mandis in Gujarat will remain shut for five days for Diwali, Virvani said.
