NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of most spices rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Wednesday. Turmeric contracts rose more due to firm demand and limited supply, and coriander prices rose slightly due to buying at lower price levels. Weak local and global demand continued to weigh on jeera futures.
At 1641 IST, the most-active December contract of TURMERIC was up 0.2% at INR 13,910 per 100 kg. On Tuesday, the contract had hit an over three-month high of INR 14,372 per 100 kg. The yellow spice has been rising due to high demand amid limited supply in domestic markets.
The contract is likely to "maintain its positive path," moving within the range of INR 13,440–INR 14,240 per 100 kg, supported by strong festival demand and tight supply conditions, SMC Global Securities said. Additionally, reports of crop damage in Marathwada in Maharashtra due to abnormal weather patterns are lending further support to prices. Going ahead, with festival demand expected to remain a key driver, prices are likely to "sustain the firm trend," SMC Global said.
At 1641 IST, the most-active November contract of CORIANDER rose nearly 1% to INR 8,146 per 100 kg. Earlier in the day, the contract hit an over one-month low of INR 8,020 per 100 kg. Prices gained slightly as traders showed interest in buying at lower levels.
However, gains were limited due to weak demand in the physical market. Going ahead, festival demand is expected to provide some support to prices in the coming days, SMC Global said.
At 1641 IST, the most-active November contract of JEERA fell 1% to INR 18,615 per 100 kg. Muted demand in local and global markets amid steady arrivals weighed on jeera prices. The contract is likely to "move sideways" amid cautious purchases from stockists and any upward movement is expected to encounter resistance at higher levels, "reinforcing the prevailing bearish outlook," SMC Global said.
