MUMBAI - Prices of tur rose while those of chana and urad showed mixed trends in key spot markets across the country Wednesday, traders said. Prices of tur rose due to festival demand and a drop in arrivals, they said. Chana was up in a few markets due to a slight rise in need-based demand by millers, they said. Meanwhile, prices of urad fell in some markets due to higher arrivals of the new kharif crop, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 25 from Tuesday to INR 5,625-INR 5,675 per 100 kg, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Prices rose due to a slight rise in need-based demand for chana, he said. Prices of chana usually see a rally spanning multiple weeks due to demand for Diwali, he said. However, due to ample availability of both imported and domestic stocks this year, prices only saw an uptrend last week, he said.

Prices are unlikely to rise further and could be supported by millers making last-minute purchases to fulfil demand ahead of Diwali, Mehta said. Post Diwali, prices are likely to be weighed down by Australian imports, which are cheaper than the domestic variety.

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,850-INR 5,875 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 150 from Tuesday to INR 7,125-INR 7,150 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices have risen due to a fall in arrivals as farmers prefer to bring the newly harvested soybean crop to the markets over their old tur stock, he said. Prices are also supported by a rise in demand for tur dal, or processed tur, ahead of Diwali, he said.

Though there has been some damage to the standing tur crop in Karnataka due to heavy rainfall in the second half of September, the extent of damage is not clear, Kedia said. The tur crop will enter its flowering stage next week and weather conditions during this period will be critical in determining the final yield, according to a trader from Karnataka.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 150 from the previous day to INR 7,400-INR 7,500 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, fell by INR 100 from Tuesday to INR 7,000 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,375-INR 7,400 per 100 kg. Prices fell in some markets due to a rise in arrivals of the new kharif crop, traders said.

Uttar Pradesh, which is one of the top urad-producing regions in the country, has reported good yields in the kharif crop, the association said in its weekly report Monday. As such, arrivals in the state could increase further post Diwali. The market will monitor the pace of arrivals, the ongoing imports, government procurement, and festival demand to gauge the price movement in the near term, the association said.  End
