India's gems, jewellery exports up 7% on year at $2.91 bln in Sept

MUMBAI – India's gross exports of gems and jewellery rose nearly 7% on year to $2.91 billion in September and gross imports were up nearly 11% on year at $1.67 billion, according to data from the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council. The country's gross gems and jewellery exports during Apr-Sept were at $14.1 billion, up nearly 4% from the same period a year ago. Gross imports for Apr-Sept rose almost 7% on year to $10.6 billion.
Overall exports of cut and polished diamonds rose nearly 6% on year to $1.37 billion in September, whereas imports declined over 1% to $125 million. During Apr-Sept, both exports and imports of cut and polished diamonds fell nearly 10% to $6.25 billion and $570.33 million, respectively. The country's imports of rough diamonds rose over 5% to $6.07 billion during Apr-Sept. Exports of polished lab-grown diamonds fell nearly 11% on year to $107.64 million in September.
India exported $1.09 billion worth of gold jewellery in September, up over 2% on year. Exports of gold jewellery in Apr-Sept rose nearly 22% to $5.80 billion. Silver jewellery exports in Apr-Sept rose over 17% to $596.41 million. Exports of platinum jewellery during the same period rose over 25% on year to $106.54 million, according to the council. End
