MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets of Uttar Pradesh fell again Monday as demand remained subdued at the earlier price levels, traders said. In Maharashtra, prices were steady after having fallen on previous days, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 15-INR 20 per 100 kg as demand did not pick up even after they cut rates last week, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Mills had cut prices by INR 30-INR 40 per 100 kg Friday.

Prices had risen about INR 70-INR 80 per 100 kg in the last week of September. After the government released the sales quota for October, market participants initially anticipated robust demand during the month for Diwali, but as demand did not pick up, prices could not be sustained at higher levels, Gupta said.

The sales quota allocated for October is more than sufficient but demand for the sweetener is sluggish, traders said. The government has set domestic sugar sales quota for the month at 2.40 million tonnes, up 2% from 2.35 million tonnes in September but down nearly 6% from a year ago, when the quota was set at 2.55 million tonnes.

Sugar prices in Maharashtra were steady Monday as mills had already reduced prices by INR 10 per 100 kg Friday, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Mills are now waiting for demand to pick up at the current price levels, he said. Prices could fall further by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg in the coming days if demand does not pick up, Kuvadia said.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,925-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,925-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 4,052-INR 4,122 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,970-INR 3,980 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 2050 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was down over 3% at 15.56 cents per pound. Unica, a Brazilian sugar industry association, said Brazil's centre-south region sugar output in the first half of September rose by 15.7% on year to 3.6 million tonnes. Higher availability is bearish for global sugar prices.  End
