MUMBAI – The area under groundnut cultivation in Gujarat has expanded by approximately 300,000 hectares to 2.2 million hectares during 2025-26, according to a survey report by the Solvent Extractors Association. Gujarat is estimated to have a groundnut production of 4.6 million tonnes during the current kharif season, it said.

The association, during 9-11 Oct, visited several farms in various districts of Saurashtra and random samples were drawn from groundnut fields and counting of pods, size and distance between two rows were studied, it said.

The overall productivity has declined to 2,092 kilogram per hectares from 2,210 kg per hectares last year. "This drop is largely attributed to a dry spell from mid-July to mid-August, followed by excessive rainfall that adversely impacted yields," it said.

As a result, despite the increased acreage, the estimated groundnut crop for 2025–26 remains around 4.6 million tonnes, similar to the previous season. The gain in area has been offset by reduced productivity, keeping overall output at last year's level, the association said. Last year's groundnut production, initially estimated at 4.2 million tonnes, was later revised upward to 4.6 million tonnes amid higher availability data and processing figures, SEA said.

Current minimum support price for groundnut is INR 7,263 per 100 kg, while the mandi prices of good quality groundnut is quoted much below the minimum support price at INR 3,600 to INR 4,500 per 100 kg for crushing. "Farmers are expecting higher purchase by NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd) to support the price in mandis," it said.

Meanwhile, in Gujarat, area under soybean reduced to 278,000 hectares from 308,000 hectares last year, according to the report. Soybean production across the country is seen falling over 16% on year to 10.54 million tonnes in 2025-26, according to the Soybean Processors Association of India.

As on Oct. 6, the all India acreage of Kharif oilseeds was down over 5% on year at 19.0 million hectares, according to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. The area under soybean, the largest kharif oilseed, dipped to 12.0 million hectares from nearly 13.0 million hectares a year ago. Groundnut acreage fell to 4.8 million hectares from 5.0 million hectares a year ago. Sunflower area fell nearly 3% on year at 71,000, according to the data. End
