NEW DELHI - Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan chaired a high-level meeting to review the progress of the agriculture sector, where officials highlighted positive trends in sowing of kharif crops, water level in reservoirs, and food grain stocks, a statement released by the ministry read.

The total area under kharif crops has increased by 651,000 hectares from the previous year to 112.15 million hectares. Major crops such as wheat, paddy, maize, sugarcane, and pulses have recorded an increase in sown area, the statement said. Urad cultivation has risen by 150,000 hectares, and onion and potato cultivation have also seen notable rise, it said.

The minister, the statement said, reviewed the situation in flood-affected regions, where excessive rainfall has affected crops in certain areas. However, other regions have benefited from a good monsoon, resulting in healthy crop growth, which is expected to boost rabi sowing and overall production.

As per the statement, the government is comfortable with the current rice and wheat stock levels, which are higher than the prescribed buffer norms, ensuring a stable supply position.

Moreover, with reservoir storage levels across the country significantly better compared to the same period last year and the past decade's average, the outlook for rabi looks healthy, the statement said.

The minister reviewed fertiliser availability and directed officials to ensure smooth and timely supply in the coming months, as per the statement. He instructed officials to maintain close coordination with the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers to prevent any disruptions, it said.  End
