NEW DELHI – Soybean production across the country is seen falling over 16% on year to 10.54 million tonnes in 2025-26 (Oct-Sept) from 12.58 million tonnes the previous year, according to the Soybean Processors Association of India. The fall in output can be attributed to lower area under cultivation for soybean, which fell over 3% to 11.46 million hectares, the association said. As per government data, the total soybean sowing area across India is down over 5% at 12.0 million hectares compared with the previous year, the association said.
In 2025-26, the average yield for the oilseed is estimated to decline to 920 kilograms per hectare from 1,063 kg per hectare in the previous year, the association said. The decline in the yield comes on the back of crop damage caused by yellow mosaic virus and aerial blight in several key producing regions, which include Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, the association said. Further, prolonged excessive rainfall during harvesting time, water logging in low-lying areas, and smaller grain sizes which reduced the oil yield, it said.
"Grain quality has been affected in most of the areas and moisture is likely to be higher this year during the initial weeks," the association said. The overall soybean crop condition ranged from "normal to poor" across major producing soybean states. Madhya Pradesh, which is the largest soybean-producing state in India, saw a decline of over 6% in its on-year acreage to 4.86 million hectares, along with a dip in its average yield by nearly 14% to 916 kg per hectare, the association said.
