HYDERABAD - Cotton Corp. of India will begin cotton procurement in Telangana from Oct. 22 as differences with the ginning mills have been resolved, a senior official of the state agriculture department said. The Cotton Corp. of India and millers will complete the tender process by Oct. 19 and notify the procurement centres, the official said. The agency is expected to buy nearly 2.4 million tonnes of cotton from Telangana this season, the official said.
Cotton procurement was stalled due to stalemate with ginning mills as these mills buy cotton on behalf of the agency and pack it into bales after due process. Ginning mills in Telangana, particularly in Warangal district, didn't participate in tenders floated by the agency for cotton procurement and processing work for this season, citing the new regulatory norms related to lint percentage, bidder allotments, slot booking, and area mapping.
As the unrest is likely to impact cotton farmers, the state Agriculture Minister T. Nageshwara Rao intervened and held several meetings to resolve the impasse between the ginning mills and the procurement agency. According to reports, the Union government, after discussions with the state, agreed to revise the lint percentage every 15 days during the procurement to match market conditions.
Nearly 330 ginning mills were expected to procure cotton this year, the official said. Besides Warangal, a key cotton producing district, farmers from Adilabad, Khammam, Nalgonda, Sangareddy and Nagarkurnool areas are expected to sell their produce at these procurement centres.
The government in May had increased the minimum support price of cotton medium staple by 8.3% to INR 7,710 per 100 kg and cotton long staple by 7.8% to INR 8,110 per 100 kg for the kharif marketing season 2025-26 (Oct-Sept). End
