MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar continued to be on the downtrend in Uttar Pradesh, with mills cutting prices for the second consecutive day on Friday, due to subdued demand despite the upcoming Diwali festival, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra, too, cut prices as demand was weak, they said.
In Uttar Pradesh, mills that had not reduced prices on Thursday cut prices by INR 30-INR 40 per 100 kilograms, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. The mills, which had already cut prices the previous day, reduced the prices by another INR 10 per 100 kg on Friday, he said. Mill prices are now on par with the resale market price levels. The resale market in Uttar Pradesh had cut prices by INR 25-INR 30 per 100 kg this week due to poor demand.
Prices had risen about INR 70-INR 80 per 100 kg in the last week of September. After the government released the sales quota for October, market participants initially anticipated robust demand during the month due to Diwali, but as demand did not pick up, prices could not be sustained at the higher levels, Gupta said.
The sales quota allocated for October is more than sufficient, but demand for the sweetener is sluggish, traders said. The government has set the domestic sugar sales quota for the month at 2.40 million tonnes, up 2% from 2.35 million tonnes in September but down nearly 6% from a year ago, when the quota was set at 2.55 million tonnes.
Sweetener prices in Maharashtra fell by INR 10 per 100 kg as demand did not pick up, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. Prices could fall further by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg in the coming days, Kuvadia said.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Down INR 30-INR 40 at INR 3,940-INR 4,080 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 30-INR 40 at INR 3,940-INR 4,080 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 10 at INR 4,052-INR 4,122 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Down INR 10 at INR 3,970-INR 3,980 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 2008 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was down 0.3% at 16.21 cents per pound, tracking losses in crude oil prices. Lower crude oil prices result in lower diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, thereby increasing the availability of sugar. End
