NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of turmeric rose while those of jeera and coriander fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Friday. Prices of turmeric rose due to concerns about heavy rainfall affecting the crop in key producing areas, analysts said. Festival demand also supported turmeric prices, they said. Prices of jeera and coriander fell due to weaker demand, they said.

The most-active December contract of TURMERIC rose 1.5% to INR 12,848 per 100 kg. Heavy rainfall in many regions has damaged the standing crop, with around 15% of crop loss reported in Nanded, Maharashtra, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Rise in demand due to the festival season also kept prices higher, according to analysts at SMC Global Securities. The firm sees this trend continuing for the next few days.

The most-active November contract of JEERA fell 0.2% to INR 19,250 per 100 kg due to sluggish domestic and export demand, analysts said. Prices are expected to remain under pressure due to bearish market sentiment in the near term, particularly due to ample availability of stocks, SMC Global said in a note. About 300,000 to 400,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) of the spice are expected to be traded by the end of the season, leaving substantial carry-forward stocks of around 1.6 million bags, Kedia Advisory said.

The most-active November contract of CORIANDER declined 2.3% to INR 8,300 per 100 kg as weak demand persisted in spot markets, analysts said. However, the fall in prices could be limited due to a likely rise in festival demand, especially in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, SMC Global said. Renewed export interest from Asian and West Asian buyers is another reason for the positive near-term outlook, the brokerage added.
