NEW DELHI –  The government has set a target to increase pulses production by 40% to 35 million tonnes by 2030-31 (Jul-Jun) crop year from the current 25 million tonnes. Addressing a press conference here, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the production will be raised over the next six years by increasing the area under coverage and productivity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the Self-Reliance in Pulses Mission and the ‘PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana' on Saturday.

The pulses mission aims to increase the area to 31 million hectares from 27.5 million hectares and productivity to 1,130 kg per hectare from 880 kg per hectare by 2030-31. Chouhan said while India is the world's largest producer and consumer of pulses, it remains heavily reliant on imports.

The minister said a robust research and development strategy has been prepared to achieve the goal. Focus will be on developing high-yielding, pest-resistant, and climate-resilient varieties and ensuring their timely delivery to farmers. The government will distribute 1.26 billion kgs of certified seeds and 8.8 million free seed kits to farmers.

The PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana will focus on developing 100 low-productivity districts using an approach inspired by the Aspirational Districts Model. Interventions will include improving irrigation, building storage, increasing credit access, and driving crop diversification, Chouhan said.

The government's vision is to ensure food security, enhance farmer incomes, and promote nutritious grains by leveraging innovation, quality inputs, and targeted support, he said.  End
