MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric rose, while those of jeera and coriander fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Thursday. Prices of turmeric rose due to concerns about heavy rainfall affecting the crop in key producing areas, analysts said. Festival demand also supported turmeric prices, they said. Prices of jeera and coriander fell due to weak demand, they said.

The most-active December contract of TURMERIC rose 1.8% at INR 12,670 per 100 kilograms due to rising concerns about crop damage in key producing regions. Heavy rainfall in many regions has damaged the standing crop, with around 15% of crop loss reported at Nanden in Maharashtra, Kedia Advisory said in a note.

Prices were also supported by a rise in festival demand, analysts at SMC Global said. However, the rise in festival demand has been lower than expected, the brokerage said. In the absence of a substantial rise in festival demand, the rise in prices could be short-lived, they said. The market is closely monitoring weather conditions across southern India, the brokerage said. For October, the India Meteorological Department has forecast above-normal rainfall for the country at 115% of the long-period average.

The most-active November contract of JEERA fell 0.6% to INR 19,225 per 100 kg due to sluggish demand and a rise in offloading of stocks by farmers on fears of a further fall in prices, SMC Global said. Prices are expected to remain under pressure due to bearish market sentiment in the near term, particularly due to ample availability of stocks, the brokerage said. Between 300,000 and 400,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) of the spice are expected to be traded by the end of the season, leaving substantial carry-forward stocks of around 1.6 million bags, Kedia Advisory said.

The most-active November contract of CORIANDER declined 0.5% to INR 8,456 per 100 kg as weak demand persisted in spot markets, analysts said. However, the fall in prices could be limited due to a likely rise in festival demand, especially in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, SMC Global said.
