MUMBAI – Oilseed prices were largely down in key domestic spot markets Wednesday. Mustard prices fell in Kota, Rajasthan, due to low demand from millers, traders said. Groundnut prices fell due to bulk new arrivals and soybean prices fell in Madhya Pradesh's Ratlam due to higher arrivals. Traders expect soybean prices to go down as new crop arrivals have started coming in the markets.

MUSTARD seed prices in Kota fell by INR 50 to INR 6,551 per 100 kg, Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader, said. Arrivals were at 5,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), down 1,500 bags from Tuesday. He also cited poor demand from millers and low-quality arrivals as the reason for the fall in prices. Mustard seed prices in Guna, Madhya Pradesh held steady at INR 6,500 per 100 kg, according to Ramdana and Sons, a local trading agency. Arrivals stood at 150 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), an agency trader said. The market was closed Tuesday on account of Valmiki Jayanti.

However, mustard seed prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan remained unchanged at INR 7,100-INR 7,125 per 100 kg, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. In Jaipur, mustard prices have stood at the same level for the past two weeks owing to low demand from millers, a local trader said. The all-India arrivals of mustard seeds was at 280,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), up 30,000 bags from the previous day, according to GGN Research.

GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam stood at INR 3,200-INR 5,200 per 100 kg, down INR 400 from the previous day, Narendra Porwal, a local trader, said. Arrivals increased sharply by 3,500 bags from the previous day to 27,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Arrivals were up sharply as new crops have started coming in, Porwal added.

"New harvest has started coming in and some is moisture-laden," a local trader from Gondal said. Moisture-laden seeds are more prone to the risk of spoilage, which decreases its oil yield, making them less attractive for buyers and processors. The price of bold quality groundnut stood at INR 7,500 per 100 kg, Triz Agriland, a peanut exporting agency from Gujarat's Rajkot said.

Prices of SOYBEAN in Ratlam fell by around INR 500 to INR 2,400-INR 4,600 per 100 kg, depending on the variety, Porwal said. Arrivals were at 4,900 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), up 1,400 bags from the previous day, he added. Prices of soybean in Kota held steady at INR 4,401 per 100 kg, Sameriya said. Arrivals rose by 3,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) to 18,000 bags, he added. Prices are likely to fall in the near future, he said. New arrivals of soybean have started coming in the market at a fast pace, market participants said. Soybean is a kharif crop which is primarily harvested from October to November in India.
